Anybody want to inherit this community?
Dear all,

It's been a fun ride but I'm basically not on LJ anymore and have other interests that prevent me from doing this community justice. Anyone want to take over ownership of this?

SOLAR LARP Pictures - 2011 (www.solarinc.org)

My mother was awesome enough to use all of her photography equipment to take photos of about 25 SOLAR players in her living room for a day. Here are the best shots. The rest are here:

I collected all of the pictures I could off of Flickr since DragonCon for our Orc-Con event at the convention. All have a link to the original picture; I've put them on Livejournal for a sense of "safekeeping" (hopefully).

LARP 1941 style
No, not set in 1941, but taking place in 1941. A friend of a friend spotted this. From a 1941 issue of LIFE magazine:

"LIFE Visits the Planet Atzor
Nebraska Students War & Intrigue in Imaginary World of Their Own"

Article and photos begin on p.102 if that link doesn't quite work.

I also notice the reference to SF/Fantasy author and war historian Fletcher Pratt's naval war game.

From the ads, you will also learn the benefits of drinking yeast in tomato juice. It will give you more ginger than ever before.

Charm 19: The Crown, the Dragon and the Seelie
Where: Scouting Mira Ceti, Nistelrode, the Netherlands
When: September 3rd-5th 2010
What: High-Fantasy larp
Who: Charm
Story: The players are traveling to the City of Shadows and on their journey they find themselves in different lands. Last time we visited the Saurians, and now they entered feline territory. The crown of the feline queen was missing, and since whomever wears the crown (and is nobility) is the king or queen... the situation was tense....

Puerto Diablo 7
Where: Stichting Scoutcentrum Rotterdam, the Netherlands
When: June 4 - 6th, 2010 (Due to extreme stress at work, I only get around to this posting now)
What: Historical Live-roleplay with a twist.
Who: Arcana
Story: The year is 1666, and New Amsterdam is a teeming city ruled by Director-General Peter Stuyvesant. The English, who have spoken to Stuyvesant at the previous event, are rumoured to soon lay siege to the city. Two large warships are sailing up the Hudson...

All images are © Martine Sprangers and © Reinoud van Leeuwen.

The event starts peaceful, and the streets of New Amsterdam are quiet (image from late Fridaynight).

This way for more!Collapse )

Sadly, there are no images from Sunday, when we held a service for all the dead: protestants, catholics and jews alike.

A lot of the characters booked passage on a ship, paying a lot of money to leave New Amsterdam. The English warships did not capture a French ship (Le Canard Bleu), and several Frenchmen smuggle the French ladies, including my own character, from the city.

Oh, and the very scary mr. Van Helvoirt? He was murdered on Saturday in the middle of the inn, while everyone was out in the streets preparing for the attack. His murderer (murderess?) was never found.

Next Puerto Diablo will be played in Port Royal, recently conquered by the French and notorious Dutch pirate Grijnzende Hein. We'll hear more about the 'demonic paintings'... in the summer of 2011!

Dead Fox Junction
Game: Dead Fox Junction
Where: Melody Ranch, Den Ham, the Netherlands
When: 20th to 22nd of August 2010
What: A sleep town in the American Wild West
Who: Evolution Events, a small Dutch larping foundation
Story: When we found the location, built by a Western fan, we just had to have a larp there, and the one-shot Dead Fox Junction was born. Very few rules, a great location, a lot of prepwork and wonderful set decoration by players was all that was needed to have a weekend of Wild West fun in the Dutch rural heartland. There were only a few in-character photos, most being taken after the event. Nobody wanted to ruin the great mood with a camera. Crosspost from my own blog.

Pics courtesy of aroka, woran, EE's own gallery and Jan Entjes, owner of the Melody Ranch.

This is not what it looks like. He can explain.

A subjective look at Conquest of Mythodea 2010
What: Conquest of Mythodea, probably the world's largest fantasy LARP event (inspirations run from D&D to Warhammer to Pirates of the Caribbean to Gangs of New-York and steampunk)

When: 4-8-August 2010
Where: Rittergut Brokeloh, Germany
Who: 7000+ players, 1500+ NPCs, 300+ crew. Live Adventure is the organizing structure.

Plot summary: The good guys of the elemental forces (fire, air, water etc) try to take over the bad guys' fortress (anti-elements, undead etc) where they captured the avatar of Earth. Over the course of the game, the good guys took it, then lost it, then took it again, i.e. won. Of course, with 7000+ players, you can assume there were a bit more stories than this one.

more explanations and pics (just a subjective selection, not the most amazing costumes)Collapse )

Charm XVIII: Only the sun rises for free...
What: Charm XVIII, a fantasy larp event in the Netherlands
When: April 15-17, 2010
Where: De Kievit in Esbeek, NL. A loved location for many larps. We've seen it featured here for Exodus as well. The location has a very IC inn, an indoor fireplace room, and big stretches of grass outside.
Who: Charm website

Plot summary: The players, a rag-tag band of humans, elves, beastlings and even a dwarf, are underway to the Bloodelve's home town: the City of Shadows. Their road is still long, and leads through the swamps of Meya-Tula, home to saurians. During their stay in the swamp they get immersed into swamp and saurian culture alike.

Za'nai'nis (rapture pose)
sna as Za'nai'nis, worshiping the sun.

Follow me into the sssssswamp!Collapse )

What I love about Charm is that the story continues throughout the setting. Last time we were on the Elven islands, and now we continue through the world, the scenery changing substantially every event. This time we were in Saurian territory, next time it might be the felines or the skaven. The props and costumes, of both monsters and players, are awesome and make for challenging photos.

I certainly loved taking all these pictures, and I hope you'll enjoy the rest of the set on my Flickr account.

Come to the Swiss side, we have Popes!
What: Habemus Papam, a para-historical medieval/renaissance LARP

When: this past Saturday night
Where: Chillon castle, an amazing castle in Switzerland. Do check out the website, even if you've "been there, done that" when it comes to castles, its location is just incredible.
Who: a "joint venture" between local LARPers and the castle's administration, 60 players, a handful of organizers doubling as NPCs.

Plot summary: a duke declaring himself pope with the support of a few Swiss-German bishops, a delegation sent from Rome to sort this out, nobles from Florence, Venice, local nobles at war with each others, murder, undercover heretics, people coming back from the dead, the fairy Melusine, arranged marriages, French and English spies... a lot for 5 hours of game time!

All in all, a fantastic evening, with one question: when do we do get to do it again?

A few more candid & staged pics behind the cut.Collapse )

Lextalionis IX
Game: Lextalionis IX - The Queen's Gambit
Where: De Vrije Vogel, Elsloo, the Netherlands
When: 12th to 14th of February 2010
What: Old World of Darkness - a fictional city in the Netherlands.
Who: Evolution Events, a small Dutch larping foundation
Story: With the hunters an increasing threat, the vacant partycenter left by a Kindred that has dissapeared functions as Elysium cum Commandcenter for the counteroffensive. But especially the younger Kindred find out that it is not the hunters that are their biggest problem, but their own elders.

Nimrod of Clan Malkavian. Security.

Big thanks to our two photographers, Kim and Ork. X-posted from my own blog.

World Involved LARP Project
Dear Larpers of the world. There comes a time when our fun hobby suddenly finds itself in a new environment where no one has heard of it before. Or if they have, they have associated it with re-enactment or other stereotypical (and less than flattering) media portrayals. Sometimes this environments is a small island somewhere along the equator, and sometimes it's a much larger island covered in sand and filled with Drop Bears.
Australia is such an island. And though they do indeed have LARPs in the eastern states, they are not very large and have not reached those in other cities to the north, south and west.
We are members of such a western city, the capitol of Western Australia. Perth. The city that many say is too isolated and the population is too spread out for true larp to occur. We disagree. Borders do not control how larp comes about, nor do those who truly love the hobby feel the need to complain about distance and means when the game provides them with entertainment they also receive when they fly over for conventions and festivals. We can remain negative and cynical forever, but we won't. Instead we are bringing LARP here to Perth, and bringing a true Organisation into being that will help make the hobby grow on its own, with a self sustainable and extremely helpful system of acquiring equipment and developing ideas from where there used to be none.
We did larp ourselves in various other countries for, added together, quite some years and are eager for this to work. For this, we need your help.

Be aware that this will reveal your face to an open populace so if knowing you will be shown on the internet and at Conventions makes you feel uncomfortable and it invades your privacy, you do not have to go through with it. But please do pass the word along as anyone can be a part of it. Just follow the instructions below and fill out what names (both In Character and Out of Character) you wish to reveal to the public. Do know also that once this is in our hands, we will be sure to respect each person's portrayal of themselves with professionalism...this is to become a public presentation of LARP Around the World and we will hope this will open a lot of eyes.

OC Name:
IC Name:
Gender: (just for us, we're doing a tally for our presentations)
Location: (general, we don't need to know your addresses and phone numbers)

Step 1: With either a videocam or webcam, make a maximum 30 seconds long mini presentation and summery of who you are in the real world and what you do for a living.
Step 2: For another 30 seconds, either show off your costume or fully play out your favourite/only character for the camera. You could also take a camera along to an event and film a bit there, but remember that any live action footage such as this can only be included if it's under a minute long (and we won't use all of it in the presentation, editing will occur).
Step 3: Place all sets of raw footage, unedited, into an email and send it to this address (larp.australia@gmail.com) with any questions and notes you wish to include. We will get back to you with confirmation and answers as quickly as possible.
Step 4: IMPORTANT!!! Do this all before March 22nd or it will NOT be included in the final project.
Step 5: Have fun with it. There's no need to be serious and there's no need to be immature in the bad sense of the word...be yourselves and you will see the finished product by the beginning of April.

We really do hope you can be a part of this rather intense undertaking and see the possibilities that we can as the project unfolds.
We wish you all the best.

Sara Hjalmarsson - Professional makeup artist and larper of 8 years. From Sweden
Mel Martens - Amature filmographer and larper of 4 years. Australian born, Netherlands for 6 years.

(PS: We are also doing panels at this year's Swan Con on the subject and will be presenting mini films and doing workshops to help people learn what larp is and how they can become truly involved. A website will be up soon to document and record the process up to this Con and beyond into what we hope is to become a permanent settling of larp as a true Organisation in this country. This video project is not designed to remain within our borders but we hope it spreads out. If we get more videos in the future, we will put them up on the website in clumps of edited mini films and it will become apparent the world of larping really is not that small)

Lullaby of Broadway Episode 2 (set 1 of 3)
I have just gotten the pictures in from Lullaby of Broadway Episode 2 which ran in October. I'm in the process of putting them up on the website. They aren't spectacular in the sense of decor and special effects but I think we did a good job all things considered. You can see all the pictures from the first set here: http://www.interactivitiesink.com/larps/broadway/photos.pl?folder=12 but here is a sample.

Room for Error
Game: Unity of the Alliance I - Room for Error
Where: Land van Kleef, Loon op Zand, the Netherlands
When: 27th to 29th of November 2009
What: Future Fantasy game (fantasy setting plus 3000 years of technological development)
Who: Studio Apocalypse
Story: While the two Beta Events (test events for the rules and setting) took place planetside, this time the colonists arrived at their new home, the auspiciously named trading station "Bold Venture". Thrown into the middle of what looks like a long-running dispute between the mighty industrial CEO's and the traditionalist Elves the weekend was a rush... As one of the first events managed to combine a fairly weapon-heavy setting with sci-fi and a lot of good roleplay it was well-recieved by all comers.

Ley Marcial
What: Ley Marcial, a larp that took place in the Spanish Civil War
When: September 2009
Where: Oulu, Finland
Who: Viivi Junno (me) and Fey J. for our LARP group 'Läskit larppaajat.' Members of an Oulu larp association OIEI ry also participated.

Fall of 1938. The battle of River Ebro has been raging for almost three months. The republicans have been nearly defeated and Franco’s nationalists, supported by Hitler, have taken the upper hand; the left wing knows it’s going to fall very soon.

Far from the horrors of the front line, on the outskirts of the city of Córdoba, lies an abandoned villa – a small Republican hospital that cares for men who have little hope for ever fighting again. Four nurses take care of their patients in peace and quiet. But what happens when a group of soldiers from the wrong side roam into the almost forgotten-about hospital?

When: 13th to 15th of November 2009
What: Old World of Darkness - a fictional city in the Netherlands.

Mordheim LARP
What: Mordheim, a LARP inspired by the skirmish miniature wargame set in the world of Warhammer
When: a sunday in late september
Where: the woods above Lake Neuchatel in Switzerland
Who: the two organizers (one from Le Four Fantastique, one from its usual player pool) are Mordheim players who thought it'd be damn cool to take their wargame to life-size. More used to organizing rules-light, atmosphere-heavy, intricate plot games, their goal this time was to run a LARP where PCs could earn and spend XP and gold during the day, so that they would gain skills and gear within a matter of hours.
